Ways to Help a 5 Year Old Learn to Be Comfortable Being Alone
- Help them identify their feelings and express them. Talk about why they are scared and explore ways to address those fears.
- Start small. Give them short tasks to complete on their own and gradually increase the time period.
- Create a safe space. Make sure the room is comfortable and secure, with plenty of light and toys or activities to keep them entertained.
- Encourage positive self-talk. Remind your child that they are capable and can do this. Talk about the things they like to do when they are alone.
- Stay close by. Reassure your child that you are nearby if they need you, but also create boundaries. Allow them some space and independence.
- Focus on the positives. Celebrate successes, no matter how small. Praise them for their courage and accomplishments.
- Be patient. Progress may be slow, but be patient and understanding. It takes time for children to adjust to being alone.
