How To Protect My Baby From Covid-19
As a parent, it can be difficult to know how to protect your baby from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). While the risk of severe illness is low for young children, it is still important to take steps to protect your baby from infection.
1. Wash Your Hands
Washing your hands often is the most effective way to protect your baby from COVID-19. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Be sure to wash your hands before and after touching your baby, before feeding them, and after changing their diaper.
2. Wear a Mask
Wearing a mask is one of the best ways to protect your baby from COVID-19. If you are around other people, wear a cloth face covering to reduce the spread of the virus. If you are caring for your baby, wear a mask when you are near them. Make sure that the mask fits snugly around your nose and mouth, and that it covers your chin.
3. Avoid Contact With Others
Avoid contact with people who are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19. If possible, limit contact with people outside of your household. If you must go out, practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others.
4. Clean and Disinfect
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home, such as doorknobs, light switches, and toys. Use a household cleaning spray or wipe, and follow the instructions on the label. Be sure to wash your hands after cleaning and disinfecting.
5. Limit Visitors
Limit visitors to your home, especially those who are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19. If someone must visit, ask them to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Avoid having visitors who are sick.
6. Breastfeed
Breastfeeding is the best way to provide your baby with the nutrients they need. If possible, breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months of life. If you are unable to breastfeed, use formula that is prepared safely.
7. Vaccinate
Make sure that your baby is up to date on their vaccinations. Vaccines help protect your baby from many serious illnesses, including COVID-19. Talk to your healthcare provider about the recommended vaccines for your baby.
8. Monitor Your Baby
Monitor your baby for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. If your baby has a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, contact your healthcare provider right away. Be sure to follow their instructions for testing and treatment.
9. Stay Informed
Stay informed about the latest developments regarding COVID-19. Follow the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and your local health department. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
10. Be Prepared
Be prepared in case your baby does get sick. Make sure that you have enough supplies, such as diapers, formula, and over-the-counter medications. Have a plan in place for childcare in case you or your partner need to stay home with a sick child.
