The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession with the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan.
The novel begins with Nick Carraway, a young Yale graduate and veteran of the Great War, who moves to West Egg to become a bond salesman. Nick quickly becomes embroiled in the lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby, who is renowned for his extravagant parties and mysterious past. Nick eventually learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy, who is married to Tom Buchanan. Tom is an arrogant and wealthy socialite with a past history of adultery.
Gatsby and Daisy’s love affair is rekindled, and the two begin a secret affair. Meanwhile, Tom grows suspicious of Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship. Tom eventually reveals to Daisy that Gatsby is a criminal who made his fortune through bootlegging alcohol and other illegal activities. Daisy is horrified and decides to stay with Tom. Gatsby, however, is determined to win Daisy back and arranges a meeting between the two of them.
At the meeting, Daisy realizes that she still loves Gatsby, but is too afraid to leave Tom. Gatsby is heartbroken, and his dream of being reunited with Daisy is destroyed. Nick, disgusted by the immoral behavior of the characters, moves back to the Midwest. Gatsby is later killed by George Wilson, Daisy’s husband, who mistakenly believes that Gatsby was responsible for the death of his wife, Myrtle.
In the end, Gatsby’s dream of a life with Daisy is never realized. Nick reflects on the shallowness of the wealthy and the hollowness of the American Dream. The novel ends with Nick noting that Gatsby’s dream of Daisy will never come true and that the green light of Daisy’s house will remain forever out of reach.
