Newborn Sleep Schedules
A newborn baby’s sleep schedule will differ from that of an adult. As newborns are still developing, they need more sleep than adults do—typically 16 to 17 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. Newborns will usually wake up every two to four hours to eat, and then will go back to sleep.
As newborns get older, their sleep patterns will start to shift. At around two months old, babies may start sleeping for longer stretches at night—up to four to six hours—and may even start taking two naps during the day.
At three to four months old, babies usually start sleeping for about six to eight hours at night and taking two naps during the day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. By the time babies are six months old, they will usually start sleeping for eight to 10 hours at night and taking one nap during the day.
It’s important to note that every baby is different and their sleep schedules may not follow the same timeline as other babies. Some babies may sleep for longer stretches at night at an earlier age, while others may take more time to adjust to a more regular sleep pattern.
It’s also important to create a consistent sleep routine for your baby. This includes sticking to a bedtime and nap time schedule, creating a calming nighttime routine, and ensuring the baby’s sleeping environment is comfortable and conducive to sleep.
