The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following measures for treating infant eczema:
- Gently cleanse the affected area, using a mild soap or cleanser and warm water.
- Pat the skin dry after washing, instead of rubbing it.
- Apply a moisturizing cream or ointment, such as petroleum jelly, to the affected area several times a day.
- Avoid using harsh soaps, detergents, and other skin care products that can irritate the skin.
- Avoid exposing the affected area to extreme temperatures and humidity.
- Wear loose-fitting clothes made of soft fabrics.
- Keep fingernails short and cover them with socks or mittens to prevent scratching.
- Bathe the baby in lukewarm water, no more than once a day.
- Use a humidifier in the baby’s room to reduce drying of the skin.
- If the eczema does not improve with the above measures, consult a pediatrician, who may prescribe a medicated cream or ointment.
