It is not recommended to fly with a child who has hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). The contagious virus can easily spread to others in close quarters, such as on an airplane.
If you must travel while your child is ill, follow the same precautions you would take in any public area. Wash your hands often and bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Avoid contact with other passengers, and keep your child away from shared surfaces, like armrests, tray tables, and seat-back pockets. Be sure to bring plenty of tissues and wipes for your child’s use.
Contact your doctor for more guidance about flying with someone who has HFMD. They may be able to provide additional advice or suggest alternative travel methods.
