Hand, foot and mouth disease is a highly contagious viral illness that is common in young children. To help your child recover, it is important to do the following:
- Provide plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Encourage rest and provide a comfortable temperature.
- Give your childthe-counter pain and fever medications, as recommended by your doctor.
- Give your child soft, bland foods to help soothe the mouth.
- Gently clean the mouth and hands with warm water and soap.
- Avoid acidic foods and drinks, such as orange juice.
- Avoid contact with other children until the symptoms have cleared.
- If your child’s or if they are not improving, contact your doctor.
